Ham and Cheese Sliders

Whether you are looking for the perfect meal to feed a crew of hard working farmers, or a flavorful appetizer to bring to a party, these ham and cheese sliders are a great option. There are so many variations of this recipe using the ever so delicious Hawaiian Sweet Rolls. Below I am sharing our family’s version! Don’t be afraid to switch up the type of cheese you use or the flavor of mustard! It is really hard to mess these up, they turn out great in so many ways! The best part about this recipe is the sliders can be made up to two days beforehand and stored in the refrigerator until you are ready to cook them. When I was teaching I would prepare these on a Sunday night for a meal later in the week to save on time when I got home from work. I have also heard of people freezing them. I have not tried that but it is on my list!

Here is what you will need:

  • 1 pound sliced deli ham
  • 12 King’s Hawaiian Sweet Rolls
  • 6-8 slices swiss cheese
  • 1/4 cup of mayo
  • 1 Tbsp. poppy seeds
  • 2 Tbsp. Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 1 Tbsp. onion powder
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Here is what you will do:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Begin by cutting the rolls in half. I prefer to cut them individually, but I know keeping them all connected and making one cut is another common method. As you cut the rolls, place the bottom half in a 9 X 13 baking dish. Use a foil dish if you prefer to cut down on dishes, are traveling to an event, making a field meal, or want to freeze them! Spread a small amount of mayo on the bottom half of the roll. Please use real mayo, it is much better!

Next up you will place 1-2 slices of ham on each roll, followed by ½ slice of swiss cheese. I just buy the slices and cut them into quarters so they fit nicely on the roll. Once you have all of the ham and cheese on the rolls, put the tops on.

In a medium sized, microwave safe, bowl melt the ½ cup of butter (one stick). After the butter is melted, whisk in the poppy seeds, mustard, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Spoon over the tops of the rolls. I have found that gently pouring it over the rolls works as well, but spooning it on will give you more even coverage.

Cover the pan with foil or an oven safe lid, and return to the refrigerator for at least ten minutes or up to two days.

After ten minutes has gone by, bake covered at 350 for 20-30 minutes, or until the cheese has melted. Uncover the rolls and cook for two more minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.

Remove from the oven and enjoy! These are dynamite with a homemade batch of macaroni and cheese!
